Chartered Accountants
What is the Chartered Accountant (CA) Designation?
CAs are highly trained business professionals who have not only obtained a university degree, but they have also completed a program of post-secondary academic requirements and a challenging final examination called the Uniform Evaluation or UFE - this exam is widely recognized as one of the most rigorous professional examinations in the world.
Most people think CAs are number crunchers that work primarily in audit and tax. However, the profession has changed and many CAs are part of the management team of various organizations and businesses, or they may be entrepreneurs running their own businesses or consultancy firms.
How to become a CA?
The most common path is outlined below, for more specific cases please follow this link. Special Circumstances.
- Start with a degree
This could be a degree in pretty much anything. Many CAs are arts majors, history majors & science majors. In fact this is why the CA designation is so flexible. The degree must be a four year, 120 credit bachelor degree or equivalent. - Complete the Prerequisites
There are 12 prerequisites that you must achieve a 65% overall grade. Prerequisite courses range from general business, IT, Tax and accounting courses. Here is a document created just for Kwantlen students that show our equivalent courses to CASB's requirements. - Find a training office
Think of this step as your apprenticeship. To become a CA, you need to get a job with a CA Training Office or CATO. Once hired, you will complete a three-year training program, which includes time away from the office to attend CASB Face-to-Face Interactive Sessions, write module evaluations, and prepare for the UFE. You will always be under the overall supervision of a CA, who will provide guidance, mentorship, and support throughout your three-year training program. Here is a link that shows the current CATO located within British Columbia. - In BC you earn your CA through the CA School of Business (CASB). As a CASB student, you progress through a series of online modules and face to face sessions that build the skills you need to succeed in the program and in the business world. After passing the six CASB modules, you will be prepared to write the Uniform Evaluation (UFE).
