Work Experience
Practical Experience Requirement (PER)
To become a CPA, students must complete a minimum of 30 months of relevant, mentored work experience. You can choose one of two approved routes based on your career goals:
1) Pre-Approved Program Route (PPR)
-
Offered through approved employers (often public accounting firms).
-
Duration: Minimum 30 months, with structured mentorship and reporting.
-
Ideal for those pursuing public practice.
-
📌 Assurance and Taxation electives are mandatory in CPA PEP for this route.
🔗 View Pre-Approved Offices:
2) Experience Verification Route (EVR)
-
Offers more flexibility; candidates may work in roles outside public practice.
-
Typically takes longer than 30 months due to less structured support.
-
You will report and validate your experience directly with CPA.
-
Greater freedom in CPA PEP elective selection (e.g., Finance or Performance Management instead of Assurance or Tax).
Choosing the right route early is important — align your decision with your long-term career path and CPA PEP elective choices.
Final Examination
Write the Common Final Examination (CFE)
The CFE is a three-day exam that evaluates a candidate’s ability to apply the technical and enabling competencies from the CPA Competency Map. It is the final assessment in the CPA certification process. It tests your ability to think critically, analyze complex scenarios, and apply professional judgment.
Structure of the 3-Day CFE
-
Day 1:
Tied directly to your Capstone 1 business case. Focuses on strategic analysis and long-term decision-making. -
Day 2:
Requires demonstration of depth in a chosen role (e.g., Assurance, Finance, Tax). -
Day 3:
Tests breadth across all competency areas through multiple short cases.
Important Update: New CPA Professional Program
Competency Map 2.0
The CPA profession in Canada is updating the CPA certification program to align with Competency Map 2.0. This includes refreshing the CPA Professional Education Program (CPA PEP), its exams, and the practical experience requirements. Collectively, these re-imagined components form the CPA Professional Program.
Developed through extensive consultation with over 4,000 stakeholders including employers, academics, students and CPAs across the country, and launching in 2027, the CPA Professional Program will equip CPAs to lead business forward in a fast-moving world.
Candidates currently enrolled in CPA PEP will have an opportunity to finish the program; however, there is a transition path to the CPA Professional Program for those who are unable to complete their current program. Click below for more information:
